  1. One of the greatest books I've ever read!  Discovered it in my first year at university, in fact it was the first book I checked out of the library.  I don't think I've ever read a more informative book which is so easy to read that it read like a novel.

    In particular I loved his humour and endless analogies, the comparisons to 'better well know cousins,' the psychologists or the way he so succinctly outlines the humanistic position and how it can be used to 'illuminate man's social existence.'

    It also gives the perfect response to anyone who have ever asked that oh so annoying of questions; 'What is Sociology and why are you studying it?'

    And finally it provided me with my favourite sociological quote;

    'Unlike puppets we have the possibility of stopping in our movements, looking up and perceiving the machinery by which we have been moved.  In this act lies the first steps to freedom.'
