  8. My father was a senior civil servant. My paternal grandfather was a partner in an import agent in Calcutta. His father had a fairly junior job in the Bank of Bengal. On my mother's side my grandfather owned a small chain of cinemas and his father was old-style landed gentry with a big pile in Lincolnshire. My maternal grandmother was interesting. She was an American and in World War II she worked in some way or other as a civilian for the US Army. She was selected to be the person to type the most secret coded telexes from London to Washington.

  11. My Maternal grand father was a Revenue inspector and Paternal grand father was a share market trader.

  12. Long way back - through to the mid-19th century - mine were agricultural labourers. My branch of the family left the country in the 1870s and moved to the East End of London. I know one was a brewer's dray man and another had something to do with the founding of the R. White's lemonade firm. My paternal grandfather suffered from rickets as a child (not uncommon in the early 20th century) and was trained as a French Polisher. He was successful at that and had his own business in Shoreditch which was, I believe, bombed in the Blitz.

  13. I'm a fifth generation fisherman, mine were fishermen.

  14. My ancestors on one side were farmers,  lawyers, lawmen, and doctors.  On the other side, they were farmers, civil servants, and merchants.   Both sides served in the military, but none were killed there.
