Is there any difference between a Brilhart 4* and a Selmer C* Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece in terms of sound quality and ease of use? I have been recently using a Brillhart 4* mouthpiece opposed to a Selmer C* mouthpiece. It seems like the Brilhart is harder to make a good sound on compared to the Selmer.

  1. Hi Andy,

Let's give you the first comparison...

    Brilhart 4* Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece - $39.99

Selmer C* Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece  $119.95

    (Prices from Woodwind&Brasswind)

The Brilhart mouthpieces are not very good  .  mostly stock mouthpieces that are an upgrade from the $18.00 ones.

The Vandoren are requested by band directors and private lesson teachers.   They are very popular and great playing mouthpieces.

It would be wise for you to try each of them out for yourself.   You may really like the Brilhart...  but I think you will appreciate the C* more.

    Thanks for reading.

    Best of luck with it.

  2. I personally prefer the Selmer C* for its ease of playing and its tone. It can cross over from jazz to blues to rock fairly well.

The difference is the size of the bore out. The inside. How much space there is allowed for airflow. It is also the angle at the tip where the reed vibrates. How much space is there as well. It all plays a role in the tone.
