What difference does our preference for a smoking or non-smoking room in a hotel make?

before reserving a room or checking in a hotel... they ask us for our preference... why?... i dont think it has anything to do with smoke alarms...coz they are necessary in any case in each and every room (more so in a smoker's room; given the higher risk of fire!!)

  1. It has to do with how smoke tends to persist in the fabric of the room and how some people are allergic to smoke.   Also former smokers are very sensitive to the smell of smoke just as a recovering alcoholic would be sensitive to any amount of alcohol.   If you do smoke in a non-smoking room, the room can't be let as a non-smoking room until it has been sufficiently deodorized and aired out.   I'm a non-smoker but I've had guests who've inadvertently smoked in my room, somewhat inconvenient to the hotel and embarrassing to me but certainly nothing they haven't encountered before

  2. Some people do not like the smell of smoke.Smoke will get into everything in the room and some people can not take the smell.
