  1. Generally, the Shinkansen trains offer Ordinary (economy class)  seats and Green Car (first class) seatings.  I am not sure if they offer sleeping berths on overnight routes.

    The economy seats are very spacious and comfortable.  Green Car seats offer even greater leg room and are all-reserved and seldom crowded, but at a significant price premium.  I have ridden both from Tokyo to Osaka.  If you can afford the Green Car, I highly recommend those tickets.
