  1. all mountain, freestyle, ski-boarding

  2. Carving - narrow with a lot of sidecut, for groomed slopes

Racing - very narrow and stiff for icy race courses

Twintips - freestyle ski with both ends bent up

All mountain - medium width & sidecut for versatility

Freeride - wide, sometimes with a turned-up tail

Powder specific - very wide, tweaked sidecut and camber sacrifices just about everything for floatation

A/T- alpine touring bindings for backcountry skiing

Telemark- skis designed specifically for telemark skiing

There are also special skis for obscure forms of skiing like ski jumping, moguls, and aerials.

  3. all mountain- these are good for everything, such as downhill, powder and snowparks

    -racing-these are used by racers

-Freestyle-these are good for rails, jumps and tricks. They can have double tips

  4. I'm not going to go into detail about what each of these styles are. It would take too long.

    A. Nordic Style Skis

    1. Cross-country racing skis (aka Skates)

    2. Cross-country touring skis

    3. Cross-country backcountry skis/ski mountaineering skis

    4. Telemark skis

    5. Ski Jumping/Ski Flying skis

    B. Alpine Style Skis

    1. Racing skis

         a. Slalom skis

         b. GS skis

         c. Downhill racing skis

         d. Other variants.(We're splitting hairs here. There are slight differecnes between all racing skis of all types.)

    2. Freestyle (twin tips) skis

    3. Alpine Touring (Randonee) skis

    4. All-Mountain skis (your basic good old-ski)

         a. Fatties (for powder)

              i. Super Fatties (for really deep powder)

         b. Mid-fats (all around stuff)

         c. Skinnys (for on the groomers)

    5. Snowblades, Skiblades, etc. (really short trick skis)

    6. The monoski...can't forget the monoski!

I think that's it. I'm sure the Telemark Monoski has a place here too...but I can't decide if its a nordic or alpine style.

  5. WillieD's answer is good, but I will add that the most common skis are Alpine skis. and the most common amongst them are either groomers (most hire skis are these), or all-mountain skis. Both these days are modern "carving" skis, and the difference is largely in the waist width. Groomers are usually under 70mm at the waist, all-mountain are usually above 70mm.

  6. Seems the others forgot about jumping skiis. Wide, heavy and long for ski flying.

  7. Telemark-cross country stile free-heel binding but for downhill riding. also can have "skins" added to climb a mountain and ski back down. very cool.

    Alpine-the classic downhill ski

Cross Country-a thin lite ski used on flat surfaces at low speeds. used on groomed trails (usually)

Back country- like cross country but used to "break" trail

Skate-Ski-a even lighter version of cross country skiis used in a skating motion by lifting your feet above the ground one at a time. used on groomed trail
