  1. A610 is quite an old model already. If you have used Canon then it is easier for you to continue using some kind of Canon models.

From PowerShot series you could choose whatever you like - A570, A580 or anything bigger in numbers, but small and slim cameras are Canon Ixus series. These will cost little bit more, but they are worth the money.

And all those mentioned cameras will produce you a very good pictures.

  2. Canon makes a very good camera, very high quality, and well-designed.  But other big mfgrs are about as good--Nikon, Pentax, Minolta, etc.

The A610 is only 5 megapixel, which is good enough but there are lots of cameras today with more than that.

If you want something smaller, there are many 'pocket' cameras, about the size of a deck of cards, that are the same quality, and take pictures just as good.  They are not as easy to use because they're so much smaller, and they might not have all the same features, but you can still get great pictures with them.  Canon makes cameras like this, like the SD line.

You can see the lineup here:

  3. Try the new PowerShot A series cameras like the A720IS, A590IS, or A650IS.
