  2. Over the US, the jet stream runs from west to east. There can be slight variations at times (for example, southwest to northeast), but it is basically west to east.  If you watch weather forecasts on TV, they will often show the current location of the jet stream on a map of the US.

    If you look at airline timetables, you'll notice that long haul flights across the US take longer going westbound than they do returning eastbound. There can be a difference of 30 minutes on transcontinental flights and an hour on flights from the east coast to Hawaii. Why? They have headwinds flying westbound and tailwinds flying eastbound.
