my husband talks about being aware of different personalities in his head. he says there are usually 4 and they are all equally strong. They are all aware of each other and of what's going on.

I thought people with multiple personality disorder are not aware of their other personalities and switch personalities.

He never switches to a different person.

what does this sound like to you?

  1. split personality or skitzo...must see the doc

  2. It could be a form of Disassociate Personality Disorder

  3. People with multiple personalities do not have an awareness of the other personalities without years of therapy. The reason they develop other personalities is to escape from their "own" personality usually due to trauma or abuse issues that their "own" personality finds too hard to deal with.

I would suggest that next time he has an appointment with his doctor or therapist, you go too so that you can ask specific questions and get things out in the open.

He may be exaggerating his symptoms to get sympathy from you, or he may have a more serious type of illness (schizophrenia) which will need medication. You should make yourself aware either way because you will need to know what to do to help him through difficult times.

    Good luck

  4. I have DID and I always knew that there were others- I just didn't have a name for it. And I didn't know my experiences were any different from "normal". I didn't know ALL of them, but I knew that a few of them existed. It could be DID. It seems unlikely to be schizophrenia unless your husband has other irrational behaviors. It's not called multiple personality disorder anymore in the US by the way, its now called Dissociative Identity Disorder ;) -Neb

  5. I think it sounds like schizophrenia. Do the personalities communicate with him?
