my daughter is going to be 1 in about 2 weeks and we want to get her some blocks but what else do they play with. I am not going to spend 40.00 on some light up toy that doesnt teach her anything. She already has a whole book case of books from when I was a kid so now we are looking for developmental toys...ideas?

  2. My son turned one last month, he got (and plays with):

Fisher Price "popper" (push toy), and no he doesn't walk yet

Cone and rings set (he can already put it together right)

Shapes and holes cube (he can get the star in the star hole, but struggles with most of the others)

    Foamy blockes

Paints (non-toxic, sat him in the middle of BIG paper and let him finger and body paint)

Drum kit (he plays with sticks)

    Xylophone

Walking push toy (get one with a speed setting, if your daughter is not walking yet its good)

Leapfrog Magnetic Alphabet (has a device that sings the alphabet as well as sounds of individual letters)

As well he likes hats, a "makes sounds when you hit it" hammer, his stuffed Fraggle, DVD's of the Muppet Show, a poster set with colours, numbers, shapes and letters, chunky books, touch 'n feel books and mirrors.

  3. The best thing is to let her explore her world right now.  Get her things that are easy to carry and easy to handle.  My daughter loved her dolls and with them we got her a stroller to push.  A little bag to put stuff in for her babies.  She loves boxes, paper towel rolls (empty), baskets, water table.  With the water table you can put water in it and drain it, put sand it, at halloween we emptied the pumpkins washed the seeds and she played with them for days,  they are easy to make.  I just got one of those flat tupperware boxes and put it on the floor when it was empty she played in it and when it was full she played with it and learned a lot of things.

  4. Big cardboard boxes, laundry baskets, pots and pans and big plastic bowls, and  big wooden and plastic spoons. These will entertain a one year old better than anything you can buy,and you have them right in your house already!! For educational purposes, puzzles with big wooden pieces, blocks, musical toys and cloth dolls. And don't forget books - the earlier you start reading to your child and instill a love of books, the brighter your child will be. Also ,outside time is very important.Show the baby different bugs, butterflies, and birds ( really, get some field guides and go birdwatching) and other animals and plants, and go to the park and play on the swings, etc.Wading pools are great for a cheap thrill, too. Blow bubbles. Or going to the train tracks and watching trains or to the airport to see the planes take off or to see the firetrucks at the fire station. The zoo is always good, too.Kids love this kind of stuff. You don't have to spend a lot of money to entertain a one -year old!

  5. Little einsteins makes really good educational toys, which are sometimes pricey, but worth it, because they will last! Any stacking or size type toy, a toy cell phone, my son plays with lots of things, including shoes!

  6. pots and pans. tuperware. honestly my kids have a room full of stuff.

but my kitchen things are far more appelling to them. go figure.

    boxes. big boxes.

but for actual toys i went for moving action things. cause and effect. my daughter just got a little guitar that sings numbers and makes animal noises. she loves it. and its not so loud to drive me nuts.

  7. My daughters favorite toy she got for her first B-Day was a little electronic piano, she also liked dolls that when you pushed a button they sang, and taught, like learning dog.

  8. Most of the toys now adays have age recommendations on the front of the box.  Also most stores, especially online break down the toys by recommended age.  My daughter will be 3 soon, but some of her favorites when she was around 1 - 1 1/2 were the see and say and her little computer that when you would press the numbers or letters it would say them.  Both are not expensive and would entertain her for hours.  Look online for age appropriate toys and then  if you don't want to spend a fortune check out local consignment shops.  Good luck and have fun!!!  It's a great age!

  9. If you go to Target, they sell toys from the Parents series. Those are awesome! Very entertaining AND educational for infants and tots. :)
