they are not latitudes of American territory, as 90 is either the north or south pole, neither of which is American territory

10, 80 and 90 are, though, interstate numbers: I-10 the furthest south of the interstates, and 1-80 and I-90 being the two furthest north of the east-west traveling interstates.

From the WayFM question...I'm pretty sure it has to do with Interstates.  I-10, I-80 and I-90 are all Coast-to-Coast interstates.  I-90 is the longest interstate followed by I-80 then I-10.  I believe they are the only coast-to-coast interstates in the continental US
