I'm going to Sydney in a few weeks and am just curious. Also - is there a difference if you are a boy or girl?

  1. I think it would be safe to say that most Australians like American accents. I know I do.

Not sure about the boy/girl thing, but would guess that girls would probably prefer them a bit more.

  2. I love the American accent. Went to the US last year and was funny, they all loved our accents, lol.

  3. No not really - accents are accents, as long as the individual has a brain that works, it shouldn't matter where they come from.

  4. I think the girls/guys will dig your accent! haha... We often hear it on TV, we have alot of TV shows from the US and obviously at the cinema's... You really don't hear all that many around the place to be honest, apart from the odd tourist.. and when you do, it's refreshing, it's a nice accent, easy to listen to, just one caution, don't be sitting in a restaurant and try and talk any louder than normal just to be noticed, that may come across as being a little obnoxious (I'm being honest)... because you'll be noticed anyway with that accent for sure! : ) Ooh and don't start all your conversations with "Back in the States... we...." and don't swim if there's no surf life saver near the beach..  (Do I sound like your mum yet?) Apart from that be prepared for total mayhem, you're going to have a blast and get lots of good attention -  Have fun!!! Hope your experience is a great one : )

  5. Personally I like the north american accent, and I'm sure most people wont mind either way. I don't think it should matter what your voice sounds like anyway, as long as what you say isn't disrespectful to the listener(s).

    Have fun in Sydney!

  6. They are alright, depends where you come from I guess.

Like down south, Im not to keen on them.

  7. It's ok.  People won't judge you on your accent.  As accents go on a whole - it a very strong/hard accent.  Americans tend to pronounce their r's quite strongly.  But Australia has tourists from all over the world - stand in the middle of Sydney for 10 minutes and you will hear quite a few different accents.

  8. What is a typical American accent?

For example: the Bostonian accent is completely different to someone from the Bronx, the Mid West or the Deep South etc.

I think it has more to do with what's said, rather than the accent.
