  1. charge you an extra tenna...

  2. it all depends on how far you are from the exchange, if too far either will not work or very slow. to earlier answers, bt are upgrading the network, but if you look at the news people are after bt to upgrade the network again to fibre, but why should they take  the cost for everyone else to use?!

  3. In other words you have one of there "crappier" lines and are due to have the line up dated at some time ( when they feel like it, in other words). BT seem to be very slow at up-grading there phone lines. that is why even some of those who already have Broadband have only the slower speed of 1gb and cannot get the faster speeds of up-to 8gb. So it is BT who are stopping the public from having the faster Broadband speeds.

  4. There are two elements to Broadband exchange lines:

    1) The exchange equipment will need to be modified (either a different line card or the setting on the existing one altered)

    2) Your telephone line (the bit of copper/aluminium wire that connects you to the exchange) may not be of high enough quality due to age or distance from the exchange in which case it will need to be physically rewired to create greater bandwidth.

  5. Hello,

(ANS) A normal BT Phone line has to be "broadband enabled" before you can use it for high speed internet access. To enable a phone line for broadband it has to be activated by BT at the phone exchange end of your connection.

**To activate the phone line for broadband use BT must fit a new line card into the rack at the exchange where your connection is terminated. A line card is very like a PC network card, its a piece of electronic circuitry.

**NOT only must BT fit a new line card but the connection has to be enabled via special software that BT use so that your connection can work with BT's network and rate adaptive equipment.

**Phone line activation times do seem on the whole to have come down, it used to takes ages to get a phone line activated by BT but now its down to a few days only.

**Once the phone line has been activated for broadband you should be able to connect your broadband equipment into the BT master socket on your wall. You will need to have a line splitter also called a broadband filter fitted to the line at the socket. The splitter is what creates the x3 frequencies :- low end =voice or fax or normal phone calls, middle or medium= the up-link & the top or highest frequency =down-link or download channel. The splitter should normally keep all x3 channels separate from each other.

**Remember old fashioned copper phone lines were never designed for high speed broadband internet access. Copper phone lines were first dreamed up over 50yrs ago.

  6. Ex BT Engineer is a lier or a simpleton, as the first poster states they just need to change a setting for your line to be adsl compliant (they flick an imaginery switch inside a computer  to give your line the extra bandwidth needed for broadband internet)

  7. change the settings

  8. An engineer will visit your local exchange and re-route your line through the Broadband equipment. This takes approx 20mins to complete.

When this has been done, and you have been notified as such, you plug into your socket the filter, router etc and your Broadband connection is complete.

The other scenario (most likely) is your on a DACS line. This is a Digital Audio Carrier System line which enables two lines to work down one pair of wires. This system is used when there is a shortage of pairs to the pole outside your home.

BB will not work over a DACS so this needs to be recovered and a 'clean' pair 'provided' to the pole before your line can be converted to BB.

    By the way......

NO imaginary switch will be flicked.

NO new copper cable will be laid from the exchange to your home.

NO equipment cards will be changed.
