Question:

What do Belgians have with Delhaize carrier bags?

Everyone seems to have one. No one seems to carry GB, Carrefour, Lidl's or Aldi bags around town. Many cycles have a Delhaize bag dangling off the handle bars. It almost seems like a local decoration.

Why. oh why does vanity stretch to carrier bags??

  1. It is very simple, Delhaize stopped giving out normal plastic bags when buying grocery's. because of environmental issue so their is less waste... I believe it is just cost cutting from their part.

the bags they now sell that the client re-uses, has the purpose of a point system. every time you bring them you get a few points and after a while when you collected enough points from the reusable bags or other promotions you get money in return.....

  2. Delhaize is wide spread in Belgium. For a better shopping they trust Delhaize.

When i compare it with other markets it s the only place where i find the beers easily, good bread, packed salad, lobster and those youghurt with mrytille.

There are three types of plastic bag.One for keeping the product cooler, one tuff bag ,and one regular plastic bag.

These are bags which can be recycled. These bags are good advertisement for the company and tuff to carry someother thing.dont stay on that.

By the way albert heyn is not bad either.Ä°t s a market where you can find stella artois and jupiler in Holland.

  3. I have no idea - I hardly ever visit Delhaize, and when I do, I tend to try and bring a bag of my own. Might have something to do with discount when you bring a Delhaize bag when shopping there.

If you see me walking through town with a carrier bag, it's more likely to be Aldi or GB if anything - usually I just use my shopping cart-thingy or a cardboard box that I found in the shop, they never charge for that!

By the way, I'm from belgium too.

  4. They are practical and it is free publicity for the Delhaize shops :-)

Well, I do not go around carrying a Delhaize bag because I don't make publicity for shops around town.

Honestly, and on a more serious note, I personally think that the customers of Delhaize carrying these bags on their bikes do this because they are easy, practical.

I can only guess that your are - most probably - talking about the expats & Belgians living in the Southern parts of Brussels.

It is probably also - consciously or not - a way to tell people they shop in a more upmarket chain of shops then Aldi, Liddl or Carrefour.

Why bother? Let them start a new trend. We do not need to follow it.

Maybe they can't afford to buy a "Rob" shopping bag or even better a  "Delvaux" leather bag LOL

I'd go for the Delvaux one : it always remains a classic and is always trendy though...for a shopping bag...a wee bit  expensive :-))

    Edit :

Hi! Albert Heyn is great, no problem with that either, except that we have to go over the border. When i can, I also shop there. Well, Brugge and the immediate surroundings are quite poshy so I guess the people there like to shop in more upmarket shops. The point is...whatever Delhaize sells, Carrefour sells it too...most of the time anyway. ..except that Delhaize tends to be more expensive.

To each his/her choice and people shouldn't criticize you for carrying the bag of your choice. We go to different shops and grab the first bag available in our car. Although we live in Belgium and don't seem to have an official government (or do we?) we still live in a democracy.:-))

To our friend Luckyman: Other supermarkets do also have  different types of recycling bags.

Well, in conclusion we could say that next to paying more for the same products these people also make free publicity for said supermarket. Who is the winner here? Certainly not the customer although we have to recognize that their produce is always fresh and of excellent quality.

  5. I guess it's the Belgian equivalent of Waitrose.
