  1. they're probably talking about cam sprockets ie the gear on the end of the camshaft that gets driven by the crank.  you can get performance ones, i think they're just lighter- not a big deal unless your going ina dyno comp or something.  the purple ones look cool with a clear timing cover though!

  2. cam gears keep your car in time, the belt or chain runs off of it.

  3. Cams lift the valves through lifters(they are not gears)http://auto.howstuffworks.com/engine4.ht...

  4. I think it probably said "gear drive cam" that means the camshaft is driven by a series of gears between the cam and the crankshaft as opposed to a timing chain or belt. This is a common upgrade when people rebuild and hot rod older V-8 engines. Dual sprocket timing chain is another common one. The person selling the car just wanted to list all the cool stuff he could think of to make it more appealing.

They also make a whining sound that a lot of people like the sound of and they are capable of sustaining very high rpm's over a long time without the breakage problems of a chain or belt.

The only other gear on a camshaft is the one that drives the distributer and they are all alike on engines that use the cam to drive the distributer.
