well they are spiders so i expect them to eat insects.

Insects since its a spider? Just find some insect/bug and drop it into their web. When the insect moves, the spider will run to it and wrap the web around it. Smaller insects, like ants, baby roaches are probably better though, because big ones can really mess up the web when they wiggle too much and may even end up going free.
