Question:

What do I Look for In a Trail Bike?

My husband and I are buying our first bikes and we want to stay as cheap as possible, but get a bike that will last for a while too. We really don't know what to look for in the bikes and what we should consider when purchasing. If you have pointers or some brands that are great for beginning cyclist that would be great!

  1. You might consider a bike that is not top of the line, but trail worthy enough for you to decide if you enjoy the sport.  Look at the Specialized rockhopper maybe.

  2. I have a Womens Specialized stumpjumper, best bike i've owned! Love it, get a Front Shock, so you don't get rattled to death. WEAR A HELMET!  Be sure to ride said bike before buying, and learn how to shift, brake before going into the woods.

  3. Define trail. You mean like hike & bike, or the singletrack on Mary's Loop in Fruita?

Since it sounds like ya'll have never ridden before, I'd suggest comfort'hybrid bikes. You ride in a more comfortable upright position, and some come equipped with front suspension (nothing heavy-duty, but suitable for easy trails). Go to a bike shop, and stay away from department stores. They sell c**p. The Bike Store guys will fit you proper, and make sure you get the right bike. Learn a little maintenance, too...if nothing else, how to patch a flat. It'll save you a walk back.

  4. buy a bike make shure it does not have any of those god d**n spring things on it (suspension)  they serve no purpose and make your bike heavyier than ship.
