I'm a complete audio noob so any help would be appreciated. I had a Sony 5 speaker home theatre system. Along with the speakers, there was a box with speaker wire clips that I plugged my speakers into, and the Composite audio outputs to my VCR (which had everything else plugged into it). It also had a cd player, and cassette player, radio and all that stuff. This box is now busted, and the composite outputs don't work anymore. I want to keep the speakers and replace the box, but I don't want the cd player and stuff. I just want something I can plug my speakers into and connect the composite audio to my VCR. What is this box called? Thanks for your help.

  1. The box was most probably a 'A/V Receiver'. You have to get a new one to get your setup running again.

  2. An amplifier or a reciever with the difference being that an amplifier just produces sound from various inputs while a reciever includes the radio tuner and amp in one box.

  3. your looking for a receiver but don't be disappointed if you buy a receiver and the speakers don't work right alot of the home theater in a box setups are not meant to be used with anything else but it's original DVD/receiver unit.
