no one ever uses the closet, but some metal and bedframe is stored there. I want to get rid of the mildew and mold.. is there a difference? is this more serious than I thought. i saw something about their being serious health risks with mold. what should I do and how do i dry up this closet? is their such a thing as a dehumidifier?

  1. If this closet is against an outer basement wall, the wall should be inspected for cracks and water seepage. It may need to be resealed.

Be sure the basement and closet has adequate ventilation. A dehumidifier for the basement would be a big help.

  2. oh yes there are definately dehumidifiers out there and they aren't very expensive either. Try some febreeze as well and they have new febreeze closet organizers with febreeze packs inside. You could just use the refills for a while and see if it works. They also sell these little plastic containers called Odor stop and they sell them at Walmart or Zellers, usually near the check out. You open it and put it where you want it removes odors for a couple of months at a time. I might put some of that mold into a sterile container and have it tested, I doubt it will be anything but better safe than sorry, right. Good luck.

  3. You can buy a dehumidifier in any department store.

You will probably want to have someone look at the mold, maybe two people, so that you can get a couple of estimates to compare.  Mold can be very dangerous.

Mold and mildew are actually the same thing, but usually used in different contexts.  For some reason, in the bathroom, we call it mildew.  In the kitchen, we call it mold.  But its all mold.

  4. You can purchase a dehumidifier to take the moisture out of  the basement
