Question:

What do I do about a wild rabbit?

I have recently discovered that a rabbit has been nesting under my tree. There only appears to be one, but I was thinking that it could have babies at some point. It might start snowing in the next 2-3 months. Would this be the time of year for rabbits to give birth, or is that more spring? I’m asking because I don’t want to disturb it, especially if it might have babies, but I just planted this tree earlier this year, so it’s still young and I have to water it a couple times a week.

  1. The rabbit will hibernate in the winter, the most it is doing at this time is either still raising young ones, or preparing itself for the long winter months. You see before hibernation they eat all the can to get their fat to stay warm, and healthy throughout hibernation, at this time they do not drink or expose. Then again the very few rabbits hibernate, so it could just be ready to mate. I would just be careful when you water the tree.

  2. Water your tree and the mother will move, likely before it has babies to a more quiet spot.   They seek quiet undisturbed areas on purpose and it won't hurt them to find somewhere else to be.  So just keep doing what you are doing and they will do what comes natural and what is ultimately in their best interest.

  3. What do you mean bu nesting?? Is she digging a hole? Rabbits always have the babbies under ground. But if it starts snowing, no worries. Underground, the temp is always the same. And withing 2-3 months, the babbies will be fine. Do not disturb her.

  4. If the rabbit is just nesting it could just have taken your garden as a resting place on its journey, it may just be passing but if it continues it wouldn't be a problem either as their may be no burrows close to you. Check hedges and fences for burrows, if there is none then there is no reason to be concerned, as if the rabbit does have babies then the rabbit will be in the burrow far away for the winter to protect them.

    Hope this solves your problem.
