I am 17 and out of school. I have almost 5 months b4 I turn 18. I would really like to go ahead and start college. However, I do not have a permanent address nor do I have a specific phone. I have been on my own since I was about 12, doing what I could to even survive the world. I scored a 585 out of a 620 on my GED test which is really good I believe. I just would like to know how it would be possible to get grants and loans without knowing who claimed me on their income tax the past three years and without having a specific address, phone number, etc.? Thanks for your help and if you have a similar experience or situation please let me hear about it. Thanks once again!

  1. Surely a family member who has gone so far as to take you in could offer to take in mail and messages for you--and by the time colleges notify you might even have a place of your own.

  2. I would suggest working with one friend or family member to let them use their address as your temporary address until you can find a permanent one. Then, go to the school that you are planning on attending and make an appointment to speak with a financial aid advisor. Explain your situation to them and ask them for assistance in completing the FAFSA. They can help you navigate the process. My only advice is that due to your extenuating circumstances, be persistent and vocal in the financial aid process. Ask questions and make sure you understand the answers. If you are not getting the help you need at the advisor level, ask to speak to the financial aid director.  Good luck!

  3. Good job on the GED, Kita.  You're a battler, I love it.

All schools have someone you can talk to about Financial Aid.  Look up the school, then find that department.  I'm sure there is a way around things for you, and I'm sure they will be happy to help you, given your situation.
