I've booked a cheap £20 return flight to italy, bergamo for me and my partner as it's my 27th bday and haven't been to italy before. I understand that bergamo isn't the greatest area to stay. Before I book my hotels, any suggetions for me? I arrive there at 10 pm and I'll be there for 5 nights. This needs to be a budget holiday.

  1. i live in bergamo!!!!

    i suggest you to stay in bergamo some day becose it's a very nice city, especially "Bergamo alta", the part of the city most old and artistic. after yuo can go in milan....a fantastic city, but bergamo & Milan are 2 city very different

    bergamo=small e nice city

    Milan=metropolitan city

    good travel....

  2. Go to Lugano, in Switzerland! It's not too far away, and it's like being in Italy except it's clean and the trains and buses are on time!

  3. Stay some 2 nights in Bergamo, go to Verona, Venice or the lake of garda and enjoy your stay !

  4. I just did a budget holiday to Bergamo and I disagree - I stayed in a budget guesthouse in the city and it was Lovely.

    The walled city is fantastic and was a 10 minute walk away from the hostel, at €50 / night for a double room. We spent a day in Bergamo, breakfasted then caught a bus to the airport and got a coach into Milan where we spent 2 nights before returning to Bergamo for another full day before flying home.

    Was a great little break, Milan is an interesting city but not as nice or pretty as Bergamo.

    Sorry if this is a bit of a ramble, but enjoy your holiday.

  5. Actually, Bergamo is a nice place - especially the old city at the top of the hill. I visit there at least a couple of times a year. You may not want to spend the entire 5 days there, but I'd recommend at least a full day. When my brother and his wife came for a visit, I recommended Bergamo to them and they say it was their favorite part of the trip. The place Andy pointed you to in Bergamo is a good choice.

    There are several other options that are reasonable and not too far away. You could take the train from Bergamo to Lake Como or Lake Garda. There are some reasonably priced places in Desenzano depending on what you consider "budget". [eg, http://en.venere.com/hotels_desenzano_de... You could also stay in Verona. An advantage to these places would be that you could easily take a day trip to Venice or Padova

    I use the Venere.com site for hotels here in Italy: http://en.venere.com/italy/ You can sort by price and rating, and read reviews by past guests.
