I just got a 1960's 14 foot lone star boat, it has an old mccolloch outboard that is 25hp, with a strange steering system, must be old school. What do I have to do to get a new outboard to work with this system or all together update the steering system? I would like to get a 40hp outboard instead of 25.

  1. What kind of "strange steering system"? Is it cables and pulleys? Those work OK if properly adjusted. The are a bit complicated and complex.

You should be able to adapt a new motor to the system you have. Pay close attention to the way the motor swivels, and hook up the new one the same.

You can go here http://www.marineengine.com/products/acc... (and other sites as well) and buy a complete new cable steer system. They are muce simpler and install neatly.

You also need to be sure your boat can handle the HP and weight upgrade. There probably is no data plate on it, but check the transom condition and poke around the website I gave you above. You may find a lot of info about that particular boat.
