Question:

What do I do if a newspaper steals my story?

Recently, my mother asked me to write a story for the local newspaper for an association she was a part of. I did, and submitted it with a headline and a photo taken by someone else. The newspaper ran the story, with a few unauthorized changes, but did not give me credit. They actually didn't even give the story a byline. They also didn't give the photo a byline. What do I do? What can I do?

  1. Call in an anonymous bomb threat if they don't credit you with the story.  It probably won't work, but you get free food and shelter in prison.  You'll be set for several years.

  2. write to the newspaper.

  3. call them. talk to  them about it. sue. or just write to a competitive newspaper wat they did to you.

  4. get a new story.

  5. Contact the editor and ask if this is their standard policy or a mistake. Ask what they require for a byline.

I wrote a couple of op/ed pieces for our paper and they gave me a byline and added my photo.

It's the paper's prerogative to edit submitted stories.

Good luck, obviously you are a talented writer for them to have published  it in the first place.

  6. Standards for which stories deserve bylines vary from newspaper to newspaper. Youneed to talk to the paper's editor to find out what those standards are.

  7. You can report it.
