What do I do if my fish has Ich?

I noticed that my black molly has white lips and scattered white spots which i didn't notice earlier cause he's been hiding under rocks. My dad said he has Ich and possibly some velvet thingy. He told me to raise the temp. to over 80 degrees f. I'm in the process of that right now. My big problems with medication are as follows:

1. I have a clown loach (no scales)

2. I have roughly 20 fry in a breeder trap

3. I have 2 swan mussels

4. I have no isolation tank....

What do i do??? I don't want my animals to die...

  1. if it has an itch then scrach it

  2. You should go out and get an isolation tank. It doesn't have to be fancy just a simple one that will keep the infected fish from....infecting every other fish in the tank.

Raise the water temp and add...i believe it was a tsp of aquarium salt per gallon. That is if you don't have any ich medication/treament stuff. an aquarist I followed had an online blog about the 10 days of ich he had to fight. Lost most of his fish but he said that the raising of the temp and the aquarium salt did the trick to kill the strains.

  3. All you need for the mussels (the biggest obstacles) is a good sized bucket that you can put tank water in.  If you have an extra filter, powerhead, or air stone you could toss in there, even better.  After that, start treating with a half dose (for the Loaches) of Quick Cure or Rid Ich, which are extremely effective against Ich.  The raised temperature will be of some use, but I wouldn't stop until you get it up to around 82-83*.

The white around the lips is likely columnaris, which is bacterial.  Look for an Ich medication containing acriflavine (like Ich Clear, Fungus Cure, Ich Guard, Parasite Clear, etc.), as these will be extremely effective against both Ich and columnaris.  Use this instead of the above mentioned treatments, again, at half strength.
