Question:

What do I do now???

I am so upset. The people that surround me don't understand me at all. The teachers in my college rarely ever appreciate what I do. Last semester I only got A's, this'd never happened before and I never heard one word of encouragement. It's like when I do something really good, everyone pretty much ignores it, they look for faults instead. Like today I turned in my homework that I spent a considerable amount of time doing and all I got was criticism. And it wasn't even just any mediocre work - I did some research, really looked at the problem from all possible points of view; it was all there. I even consulted some experts from the field to get a better understanding. The teacher read it, then bombarded me with questions about things she would know if she had read the paper more carefully. I did my best to answer her. But no matter what I said she discarded it by saying it was rubbish! Nobody cares what I do, or who I am. I just wanna give up. I just feel like I don't matter.

  1. College life is a miniature reflection of world that you will be living in without the monetary hardship, learn to survive in college is one step to be living in this world.

Appreciation and praises from other is good, but is not the essential to ones appreciation of oneself. You must learn to have more self-esteem and able to give a pat to your own back when a job is well done.

Never mind what others think of you, you need to know and responsible for your own actions, and able to stand up with your own self- examinations. Once you can answer honestly to yourself that, I have done well and did the best I can, then that is all that matters.

By the way congratulation of A's you got from your classes, and keep up the good works.

  2. It sounds like you might be thin-skinned.  Accept the criticism and see how you can improve.  Don't seek encouragement or external praise, you will not necessarily get it from others.  Take pride in the good work you do, but do not expect praise from others -- you're not in high school anymore.  Honestly, as I re-read your question it comes across as whining.  Examine the problem and find a solution.

  3. You are going to meet people that that throughout your entire life.  You can decide here and now, to let them suck you down, or you can keep stepping and know you did a great job.  Go back to that teacher in her office and tell her you want her to read it through. She may have been posturing for the rest of the class.  If that doesn't work - go to the Dean of your department.  Your teacher answers to someone - most bullys do.  Go over her head if you must, but try with her first.

  4. There is no sense in trying to impress others. Did you impress yourself? If you really feel you got a raw deal, take your paper to a higher level and explain that you feel the teacher didn't even read it. But, bottom line, work hard to feel good about yourself, and be proud of who you are. If you don't get praise, it usually means they are mad that you did better than they thought you would. Chin up!

  5. There is an art to college research papers. It's not so much

about the effort, depth, and detail of the project as it is about

finding out what kind of paper they want from you and producing it. Go back and review some of your "A" work - the answer lies there.

From reading your question I'd say you're quite brilliant.

But that's not enough. Unless you've perfected plans to

re-invent the world, you'dd better learn to play the game

    their way.

When you get your degree in your hand,

then you can do it your way

Hang in there and good luck.
