If I sit in the middle, the width of the canoe makes it too difficult to paddle.

  1. Put all of the gear you will be taking in the front of the canoe. Just make sure it not too much heavier than you. You don't want your end to fly up either.LOL Be careful and enjoy your trip.

  2. Put a little weight in the opposite end but try this. Turn the boat around and paddle backwards sitting the same traditional way but closer to center. You are not too far center but closer. If its a square stern then it cant work of course.

Better yet, get an Old Town Otter. $250-350. I switched to this touring and white water hybrid and very rarely use canoes now. Lakes, rivers, fishing, kids, wind and rain, everything but heavy freight, but you have your trusty canoe for that....

  3. Can you put a cooler or something else in the front of the boat to help with the weight distribution?

  4. Canoes act like wind vanes! Move to the front if you are paddling into the wind. Move to the back if you are paddling down wind. You can also use a double bladed paddle if you can't work a regular canoe paddle. You need to locate your seat or kneeling position to trim the canoe slightly bow light. You can kneel or sit to the side of the canoe to paddle but you will have to master strokes allowing you to control the boat from one side only. Buy some lessons.

  5. Take a large rock and sucure it to the front like with a rope or bungee cord u might need to sit more twords the back

  6. even with extra weight, you could still have problems, consider getting a second person to paddle with you

  7. get a backpack and fill it with your supplies like bottles of water/food/extra clothes, and put that in the front to counterbalance your weight
