Just recently my Nikon D-80 tipped over because of its weight on my tripod and I didn't notice right away but when I tried to clean my lens and filter I discovered I wasn't able to get it off! I'm distraught. My camera isn't even a month old. The tip was slow and on carpet plus it didnt even hit the floor completely. I don't possibly know how the threads could've gotten stuck that easily? Is it just safer that I go to a camera repair shop? If so what kind? Any camera retail shop? I'm just really worried because I'm scared to hurt my lens. Please help!!!! Thanks in advance!

  1. Any good repair shop will have a filter remover, a specialized circular tool that many 35mm slr photographers also had.  (I don't remember where I hid mine)

Most likely, your lens had some impact on one edge and the threads of the filter were slightly knocked off center.  If the filter is a protective 1a or UV, I wouldn't worry about it.  In fact, I'd never even remove it for cleaning, since no dust would get between the filter and the lens anyway.  I have protective filters that I haven't removed from some lenses for years.

I'd be more concerned if your lens was acting up in any way.  If not, don't worry about it.

By the way, go to a real camera shop or service center.  Camera counters most likely wouldn't be able to handle this for you.

(tip: try using a rubber jarlid remover first.  You might just save yourself a trip.)
