Today I received a letter from Sallie Mae saying that they had turned me down for a loan. I have a loan with Sallie Mae that has gone through already. Then in the very top corner of the letter it has a relatives name on it! I did not give her or her mother permission to use me as a cosigner! I have my own education to pay for so why the h**l would I cosign for someone else?! What should I do? We have had disagreements in the past and enough is enough. How will this affect me and what action should I take?

  1. Get a lawyer and discontinue any discussions with this person.  I hope they were not someone that is actually your "friend".  Obviously this is very shady and you may consider taking legal action against them if possible.  The less interaction with them, the better, at least until you speak with a lawyer.

  2. CHECK YOUR CREDIT REPORT, IF ITS ON THERE FILE A POLICE REPORT

  3. Request your free credit report from annualcreditreport.com or call them toll free @ 1-877-322-8228 for all 3 free reports. If it's on there, dispute it immediately. You can also put the account on fraud alert through Trans Union Fraud Dept. Their toll free # 1-800-680-7289. They will notify the other 2 bureaus for you. It has to be renewed every 90 days to keep it active. I believe with  a police report will keep it on file for 5 years

  4. This is boarderline identity theft, which all government agencies look down upon.  First step would be to run your credit to confirm your suspicions (you can do it free).  Then if it is there, Contact the major Credit Agencies (EX: Equifax, Experion, TransUnion) and talk to them about starting up an investigation.

  5. What they did is forge your signature. That is a felony and can be prosecuted in a court. they can pull time over that if convicted. I would check my credit and see if there is anything else that looks unusual. That can also be conscrued as Identity theft. Contact a lawyer and see what your options are. But check your credit report first, relatives like that you dont need enemys.

  6. Report it to the police
