  1. Depending on what you mean by "break" vs. split and how far up into the nail bed did it go...

If it is broken and not too far up, just as you would with a human cut, lay the dog down, elevate the paw and apply pressure.  You may even want to appy an over the counter antibiotic ointment or spray, like bactine as it will also help with the pain.  Keep the pressure until the bleeding stops.  Try to keep the dog from running around for rest of the day to allow a good seal to be made on it.  You can also consider putting gauze and tape around it to keep the dirt out and pressure on, once the bleeding has stopped.

  2. my dog did this I put betadine on it,if he is still in pain in morning take him to the vet

  3. If its not bleeding there is really nothing you can do. If its bleeding you need to call the vet.

  4. hi,

Some dogs need a nail trim every month or so; others can go for several months without little or no trimming, usually because they do a lot of walking and running on hard surfaces.

Without trimming, nails can quickly become ingrown or long enough to make walking uncomfortable. Long nails snag easily on carpet, upholstery, and even your clothes. Snags can lead to a tear, an injury that can be bloody as well as painful.

    here are some guidelines:

    hope this helps.

  5. Corn starch will stop any bleeding but there is not much else to do.Your dog will limp for a little while but the nail will heal.Just make sure you keep it from bleeding too much and try to trim any broken nail away that might be causing additional pain.

  6. call your vet... better safe than sorry... its not to big of a deal dont worry
