Question:

What do I do with my teeth?

So, I have a problem with my teeth. My upper incisors seem to be kinda damaged, they're not flat like they used to be, like I broke em with something. But the thing is I didn't. So could it be attrition already? I'm only 17. It's not caries btw, that's for sure. They've been like that for about six months now and they are really noticeable and affect my life in a way. You know, I don't smile that often anymore and stuff like that. And well, I figured I should go to check out with my dentist during summer (before school starts) but each time I mentioned to my parents, they gave me "We'll see" type of answers. My dad said he had a similar thing, but they eventually flattened after some time. But the thing is I don't want to spend time waiting for them to flatten cause like they are really thin. I fear that they might even break. We did went to an expert who suggested flattening them, but we didn't do anything afterwards. So my question basically is - should I go to dentist by myself, without my parents? Cause it's not exactly as just fixing bad tooth, it's more serious than that? And like I'm said I'm 17, so I dunno if I should do it without my parents. But then again, they pretty much seem uninterested in doing anything about it. And I definitely wonna do it before school starts, cause I'll be moving to different school this year and I don't want my teeth to stop me from making friends etc.

Please help out.

  1. Do you have a job where you can pay for a dentist? Tell your parents your willing to help with the cost. Do perhaps grind your teeth at night? That can cause wear.

  2. You can go into the dental chair while your parents are in the waiting room, but since you're not 18 you are technically a minor and all treatment must be consented to by your parents.

Grind can cause fracturing, a night guard will help prevent that.  Depending on home much smoothing you want you can do filling, crowns or just grind/polish them down a little.  I would recommend the later since it is the least invasive.  The less you have to cut the better.  Good luck.
