Question:

What do I do with the sod removed from my lawn?

I recently excavated my 40 x 20 ft lawn to a depth of 2 inches. Now I have a huge pile of dirt (5 cu yd) and basically really dead sod (theres barely any roots since my lawn has been dead to the root) lying along my fence line. My local landfill wants to charge me 30 bucks(per trip) because its considered "construction debris waste"!!

I was considering filling a grip load of sandbags to just avoid the transporting costs but didn't seem to reasonable... Anyone have any ideas?

  1. I would find ways to contact anyone in your neighborhood that would want the stuff for use in their compost pit or garden, as this can be used to mix with other plant residue etc., to use for gardens.

  2. There is usually someone looking for "Fill Dirt", run an add in the local paper or "shoppers' news".

  3. I don't know where you live, but I live in Cobb Countyy Georgia, and have a vegetation "land fill" near by. It's like a dump, but only for vegetation. And I'm pretty sure that it's self service. It's not like a company that takes your vegetation and charges you. Plus it's cheap. I think it's only seven bucks to drop off as much as you want. Anything from a few extra tree limbs from pruning, to logs from a tree you cut down in your backyard. But the only problem is that this might be the only one. It's usually located by your other county services, like the dump, and county police, etc. Hope I helped!

  4. Why don't you build yourself some planting mounds with the old grass and the bottom...........add dirt , plants, bark, and big rocks.........I love them, they make a house look so nice...instead of just flat beds...........have fun........just lay it out first..........5 yds isn't much dirt......so simple to do.

  5. Poor planning, pay $30 per trip and clean up the neighborhood. 40x20x2" what is that two trips!

    Good Luck,  ;-)

  6. Try to find someone with a compost pile or a dog that digs.
