Alright the first equation is this:

-(x-1)+4x = -5

What do I do with the minus sign times the x?

The second one is:

4+6x=12

It equals a decimal, but you can't have a decimal, so how do I make the answer a fraction?

Please help!

  1. First Equation:

    1. Expand the brackets; remember that (- x + = -) and (- x - = +). The x really has a +1 in front of it, we just don't bother to write that.

    -x + 1 + 4x = 5

    2. Group them.

    3x = 4

    3. Solve.

    x = 4 / 3

    Equation Two:

    1. Group the terms.

    6x = 8

    2. Remember that a fraction is simply a division sum..

    x = 8 / 6

    3. Cancel it down.

    x = 4 / 3.

  2. 1st equation: -(x-1)+4x = -5, using the distributive property, -(x-1) turns into -x+1 because a negative times a positive x is negative x while a negative times a negative 1 is a positive 1.  After that your equation is

    -x+1+4x=-5, so, combine like terms, which would be 3x+1=-5, subtract the one on both sides which would be, 3x=-6, and your answer would be, x=-2

    2nd equation: 4+6x=12, subtract 4 which would be, 6x=8, and then divide the 6 which would mean x=8/6 or 1.3...

  3. -(x-1)+4x = -5  Multiply though by the (-)

    -x+1+4x = - 5

    3x = - 6

    x= -2

    4+6x=12

    6x = 8

    x = 8/6 = 4/3

  4. 1. -(x-1)+4x=-5

    > -x+1+4x=-5

    > 3x+1=-5

    > 3x=-6

    > x=-2

    minus times x is -x  because minus can be considered as -1

    so -1 times x is -1x , which is -x

    2. 4+6x=12

    > 6x=8

    > x = 4/3

  5. -(x-1)+4x = -5

    This equationn is meant to teach us

    that a minus sign in front of a parenthesis

    changes all the terms inside

    -x +1 + 4x = -5

    add variables and transfer integer

    (subratact 1)

    3x = -6

    x = -2

    4 + 6x = 12

    We need to solve for x

    Subtr. 4

    6x = 8

    x = 8/6

    x = 4/3
