I changed the batteries in this thermometer clock thing I have the other day and I was unsure what to do with the old batteries. Do I throw them away or do I recycle them? I left them in the junk drawer until I find out the answer.

  1. Find  if there is a  Batteries Plus near you ( http://www.batteriesplus.com ).

They take all kind of batteries.. You should definitely recycle them.

A recycling center is also a good place to go.

Radio Shack doesn't take old batteries...at least where I live they refuse to take them.

  2. If they are rechargeable, yes, Radio Shack is the right repository.  If they are not rechargeable, you throw them in the trash.

  3. You are encouraged to dispose of all batteries, rechargeable or not, in a hazardous waste collection center.

I save up about a year's worth in a plastic shoe box and drop them off at a local haz mat center.

  4. Many local towns collect them and have a drop-off site.Check with your town

  5. some fire departments will take them for recycling....

  6. you can take them up to radio shack and they will recycle them for you.

  7. Take them to you local recycling center where they will dispose of them for you for free. This will keep our environment clean and acid free. Some recycling centers will pay you to recycle your batteries there if you have about 100 or so. The metal and chemicals in them are valuable.
