  1. jailbreaking an ipod will unlease hundreds of fantastic games apps that you wont find at the itunes store.

there are about 30 itunes games for the ipod touch and iphone at http://myfreeiphone.co.uk/wordpress search for free iphone games

  2. When I bought my ipod it was firmware 1.1.4.

Right now it's at firmware 2.0.

I was able to jailbreak my ipod on 1.1.4. and it unlocked my ipod to 3rd party applications.  I was able to download for free, games, themes, dictionaries, tools ect. ect.

Of course, now with 2.0 Apple has the App Store which enables the ipod to download third party apps (which are approved by Apple - and often not free).

The benefit of jailbreaking your ipod would be that you are capable of downloading apps that Apple hasn't approved of.  Which can be very beneficial, but if they're corrupt, might mess up your ipod.

I mostly used it for themes, because you could change the entire look of the ipod.

Now, I don't think that they have upgraded their apps to the 2.0 firmware.  So, you can jailbreak it but wont be able to download anything just yet.

I have not jailbroken my 2.0 firmware because of that.

When they do convert their Apps, I will.

    p.s.

    Jailbreaking voids your warranty.

So if it gets corrupt - no replacing it.

But I only had to restore my ipod once.

and never had a problem with jailbreaking it.

bottom line: jail breaking means you can download any app that someone has put on the "Installer" (which is the jailbreak version of the "apple store")...

    that's pretty much it.
