What is that something? And how much does it cost? (I know another thing that you need in the laptop, is usually built in, So I'll buy one built in...

  1. If your laptop has built in WiFi all you need is a wireless router 802.11 .Either net cable from your DSL router to the wireless router then to your desktop. If you go to a computer store ask them to hook you up with what you'll need. After that it's piece of cake.

  2. Most laptops come with built-in wifi preselected and included in the price.  If you order a custom-built laptop, you may want to splurge the extra $30 or so and get built-in bluetooth+upgraded a/b/g or b/g/n wifi.

To be wireless at home, you need to get a wireless router.  I like my Belkin 54G router (first router I owned) and it came with a CD that guided me step-by-step what got plugged in when and where, as well as helping me set up security and such so everything worked right.  It's still the cheapest one I know of, only $39 available at most office stores.  Others may have this but I don't know.

  3. Buy the laptp with wireless built in and today that is most of them and it costs next to nothing.

You then need a wireless router that you can get from any computer store. Just make sure it is the same type of wireless as your laptop. You will usually see 802.11a, b,c, n or any combination of them all.

Once you have a router, connect it to your desktop with an ethernet cable, connect another ethernet cable from the router to your modem. Check you have internet on your desktop (you may have to install software), then follow the router manufacturers instructions for setting up your wireless connection.
