What do I have to do to travel to australia?

I am a US citizen.......what kind of passport or Visa do I need? Can I drive a rental car with my US license while in Australia? Is a health record necessary? Where is the best place to go for a single gal? I am interested in a safe, beachy place close to a city easy to navigate,,,,

You need a US passport and an Australian visa. I can only help on the Australian side of things.

The type of visa you need depends on what you want to do in Australia and how long you wish to stay. The most common and easiest to get is a 3 month ETA tourist visa. Once you have your passport, you can apply online for the visa and you will receive it almost immediately. Go to: http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/tourist/... for information and to apply.

You will be able to drive a rental car on your US license and won't need to obtain an International Driving Permit.

For short stays, there are no particular health requirements. You don't need any shots unless you've recently visited a country in which yellow fever is endemic.

All of Australia is safe provided you use the same type of commonsense you would at home. Some suggestions for good places to go:

Queensland's Gold Coast is where many tourists go. It has amazing beaches, nightlife, casino, dining out, shopping, touristy things and heaps of single guys and gals. It's also only an hour away from Brisbane, the state capital. It's a bit glitzy for me, but I'm no longer a young single gal - I think you'll probably love it.

Sydney is our largest city, but is beautiful and has great beaches and everything you'd expect to find in a big, busy city. Great nightlife, dining out, shopping etc etc.

If a tropical paradise appeals, you could go further north to the Whitsunday Islands, but there's less in the way of night life up there.

Cairns isn't really beachy and isn't a very large city, but it's the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the tropical rainforests.

First, you need a passport.  See 1st site below for all passport application info and to print out the forms.  Then you need an ETA visa.  See 2nd site and read the section under "Entry requirements.  Follow the link there to get to the page to apply for an ETA visa.  I will leave place recommendations to others.
