I've always LOVED cars since a child. I'm currently a sophomore and I'm about to turn sixteen in October. I've been a big fan of street racing and all that good stuff. I'm thinking of being an Auto-Mechanic as a career, but I don't know what I have to study to make that dream a reality! Any help, please.

  1. Electronics has become a major part of the automotive industry and the more you understand the better off you will be. Just about anyone can change parts on a car. The challenge is being able to diagnosis the problem and get it right the first time. As a diagnostic technician you will be in demand and command a much better pay check. Being bent over the hood for hours is fun when your young, but as the years add up your back will not appreciate it one bit. I've been at it for 41 years and now all I do is diagnosis the problems for the other guy to repair. I get the big money and my hands stay clean, this is what I would recommend for you to strive for.

  2. Determine where you want to work, and then ask them what they would want before they would hire you. The shop might have an apprenticeship program that would save money or they may say which, if any, schools they like. Don't listen too long to the school's counselor/salespeople! If they say certain shops hire their Grads, go there; find out if true & as what. I've seen Tech school Grads hired in as janitors, really. As for hours most shops rotate teams, so they have to work 1 weekend a month. Pay is usually "flat-rate" meaning each task has a pre-set time, which they'll lie to you and call it "commission." But if the task pays 1hr and it takes you 3, expect to eat 2hrs of it. Don't forget, just the cost of your toolbox could put you through College. Then you don't have to work where salesmen are treated like gods and mechanics like scum. I still have my toolbox, at home. I went back to College, now make more than 2X, with more vacation time etc. as a High-tech Tech, with the company buying the tools.

Believe me, there is a huge difference between enjoying cars as a hobby and working on them for a living.
