What do I look for when I'm switching lanes?

The thing is, when it's time for me to switch lanes, there is always someone to tell me when to go, but I need to know for myself because once I drive on my own I'm not going to have someone in the passenger seat all the time.

  1. my driving instructor taught me a really basic and simple technique

    Signal, Mirror, Shoulder

Put on your signal, look in your mirrors, then look over your shoulder. look for other cars which also might be trying to change into that lane and look for motorcycles.

  2. WHEN SWITCHING LANES ALWAYS MAKE SURE NO ONE ELSE IS BOWLING THERE, AND THE PIN SITTER  IS WORKING

  3. A car where your car will be... Check your mirrors(rearview and sideview) then glance over your shoulder to make sure no one is in your blindspot then go over.

  4. Just have an idea of where other cars are before you change lanes, make a very quick check of your surroundings using your sight and mirrors, try not taking too long to check around or you might end up rear-ending the car in front of you, be sure to try to maintain speed, or either speed up and you're good to go

  5. another car?  you should ask your instructor.  and not rely on someone to tell you when to switch lanes.
