Hi, I'm 18, going to be a college freshman in upstate NY. The school is right on a lake and right next to the Canadian border. Problem is, I was born and raised in Florida and I've never lived in snow. I have no idea what to buy or what to bring, how much hot weather clothes I should bring, etc. Help?

  1. canadian border winter is longer than its summer so you need:

-. Dress in layers and be sure you have gloves, socks and boots that will keep you warm enough for winter conditions.

-. to avoid winter cough cover your mouth loosely with a scarf or mask and drink plenty of liquids

    -. use glasses

-. Find a good moisturizer with a sunscreen, preferably with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 30. Look for creams than lotion,  cause they richer and  they have more emollient

-. Drink plenty of water, eight glasses [daily],

-. make sure you have good breakfast before going out from your home.

-. if it is necessary use artificial tear, to keep your eyes moist.

about the summer. it is quietly uneasy to predict cause  one day it will be so hot so that you can’t stand to be outside and the next day you will need a warm sweater.

it says: not only does that the temperature fluctuate from day to day, but from hour to hour. Mornings and evenings might be sweater weather and during the day it’s very warm. Or the heat could continue into the night. The best thing to do is have a sweater ready, dress for heat and don’t forget your hat!

  2. jeans are a start. i'm sure you have some?

i would also advise sweatshirts. they're comfy, and warm. Plus, you can throw them over any short sleeves you already own.

sweatpants are also nice for at your dorm.

    long sleeve shirts

coat (i suggest a nice pea coat or a puffy coat)

scarf, if you would like... gloves, hat/earmuffs.

    PLENTY OF SOCKS

boots or athletic shoes? maybe moccasins or something if you'd like.

    blankie for your dorm :)

as for how much to bring, that depends. i would suggest to first pack winter clothes, then pack the small summer clothes with extra room you have.... plenty of short sleeve shirts is fine cause you can wear them all year; whether summer or winter (under something bigger).

also, it depends how long you're staying. think about when your first  vacation is, when you're planning on going home? pretend you're going to normal high school, how many pairs of clothes do you get through?

also, theres often clothes at a college for the college. like NYU (or whichever college it is) sweatpants/sweatshirts.

    have fun.

  3. you,re in for a long winter than warm or hot weather ?  buy a winter jacket and gloves in ny cause you won,t find them in fla.  ?   wear long sleeves shirt or sweater for indoors ?   it can be chilly inside sometimes !   i advice you to go shop around in NY stores and you,ll see plenty of warm clothes , jacket and boots for walking out in a snow ?

  4. You're going to need:

    pants: I always thought corderoys

were warmer in cold weather than jeans

but just make sure you have some heavy pants

to wear.  also yo'ure going to want

pj pants for when you're home and want to lounge around.

socks: make sure you have LOTS of comfy socks

with lots of material, thick and or long like knee socks.

tights:  i don't know about you, but even in cold weather

i don't like to wear pants ALL the time, so make sure

you have some tights to wear under skirts. You can

also wear them under your pants for an extra layer.

you can get some good solid warm skirts for when

you want to look nice and it's cold. just look for good

    material.

A quality winter coat:  it would probably be best if

you waited till you got up there to get a lot of this stuff, especially

since it's not going to get TOO cold right away.

but you're going to get more selection in the store up there.

make sure your coat it is comfortable and warm.  I would also not

    get one that's too snug.

leave room in the fit of the coat for layers underneath.

for tops, you're going to need sweaters

or sweatshirts to keep you cozy.also,

get some thin long sleeve t-shirts to wear under them.

    just think layers.

    there's no question about it,

you need a hat, preferably one that covers

your ears.  a lot of heat escapes through

the top of your head, and if the cold wind blows

on your ears, you may get ear aches.

Shoes are kinda hard.  when it snows, your feet are going to

get wet, and sometimes this stains shoes.  Get some good

solid boots with traction on the bottom so you don't slip n slide around.

and get some good solid sneakers.  (hint:

if you're going to a party or something

you can take some cuter shoes with you

and put them on when you get there, or just

make sure your socks or tights are nice

and take off those wet shoes when you get

    to your destination)

    gloves and or mittens:

ok personally i like mittens better, because your fingers

are all together and it seems warmer. plus they're cuter

but if you need to do stuff

out in the cold, gloves offer more flexibility.  if you're going

for gloves, it's best to opt for leather, since knitted ones

can let a lot of cold in.

you've got about a month an a half

of nice weather left so pack your summer things

    accordingly.

oh! also, your dorm might be over heated so

don't get rid of your shorties n tanks right away ;)

it could also be real cold so make sure

you have good blankets and slippers.

    good luck with school

and i hope you enjoy the change in climate.
