Question:

What do I need to be a private tutor?

I'd really like to do a little tutoring to earn some extra money (I'm a student). I have excellent GCSEs, good AS levels and a certificate in adult education (in humanities). I'm working on my degree in history with the Open University, with a view to work for them at some point in the future. So some teaching experience would be useful to me.

At any rate what I need to know is do I need any special licence or qualification to tutor people privately? Since I may well be teaching under 16s, do I need a CRB check and if so how do I go about getting it?

Any other advice on how to set this up would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Ask your local job centre, they will be more helpful than us. As for the CRB record, I think you are going to need it - ask them about that as well.

  2. I always find that I prefer tutors with a slight amount of knowledge and a darn good woolen sweater vest.

  3. With must reputable Tutoring agencies (if you wish to go down this route), you will need at least a degree and many ask for a teaching qualification.

Yes, they ask for a CRB check also.

  4. So long as you know the parents (for your own safety) and are totally honest about your lack of formal qualifications then you are ok.

  5. to not be in the uk - how many people do you know who pay for private tutoring? we have no tutoring culture in the uk so your market is always going to be super tiny - germany on the other hand has a huge tutoring market - I've been tutoring here for the last 12 months - easy money.

  6. It is useful to get your own CRB check but if you join a tutoring agency they will get you one - however, you may have to pay towards it (about £20).

  7. I think you have to register with the Department for Education and they will sort that out. You will have to pay of course..

  8. Good marketing and loads of fliers

  9. The only thing you should have to do, is find a few students that need your help. Talk with their parents and set up a time to meet. This meeting will be to discuss the needs of the student and if you can help them with that need. Then discuss the tutoring schedule and your fee.

    Hope this helps, good luck.
