What do I need to come in and out of mexico?

If you are going to FLY to Mexicol you must have a passport.  If you are going to Mexico by LAND or SEA, you currenty need a photo I.D. and proof of citizenship...EITHER  a passport OR a birth certificate.  See site below for current infol

Last time I crossed they asked where I was going and asked for nothing to cross to Matamoros.

You will need $5 pesos as a peaton.

If you are going beyond the "Border Zone" , more than 100 km  then refer to "Charlies answer"

To go back, and I hate to say this but if your "whitey" and you have no luggage and your half in the bag speaking perfect English Probably just some I.D
