Question:

What do I need to do after inheriting a handgun?

I just inherited a gun from my mother. Not sure which one I'm going to take--the .32 or the revolver. I'm not sure if it makes a difference. She had 2 guns and I'll get one while my sister takes the other. The problem is I'll have to take mine across a state line to get it home. I thought I had to have a permit for it, but my friend said you get the permit from taking classes to learn how to shoot it. So do I have to take the classes first, then get the permit before I can bring it home; or can I bring it home in my trunk or something and then get the permit here? This is really confusing me.

  1. I have a (terrible) feeling that many of my contacts know a thing or thirty about firearms. I'm going to star the h**l out of this question and hopefully one of 'em will see it and quit taking pictures of their junk long enough to answer it.

  2. The beauty of the Constitution enables us the right to own guns.  I brought all three of mine home from VA in the trunk.  You don't have to do anything in the way of registering it.   Passing a gun down through the bloodline is not the same as buying out of a store.

When you "purchase" a gun, you have to apply and also pass the background check. And the serial number of the piece you buy is recorded.  Inheriting it is a different matter.

Still, take the safety classes and learn the right way to handle the firearm, so that you are comfortable in the event that you actually have to fire it.

  3. Learn to shoot it, safely, responsible and well.

    >>permit from taking classes<<

That would be for a concealed carry permit. You do not have to have a permit in "most" cases just to own a handgun**.

    State by state firearms laws

Firearms training is a very good idea though.

    >>Bring it home in the trunk<<

Unloaded and in a locked case.
