Hello everyone. I am going to work in Spain from the end of August this year. I am considering taking my car over to Spain to use whilst abroad for the next year.

I have had conflicting reports on what I need to do - so can anybody on here give me a definative response?

I have been told that I do not need to register the car with the spanish authorities for the first 6 months, all I need to do is ensure the car is taxed and mot for this country but I need insurance to cover myself in Spain

Look forward to your replies

  1. As far as i know, this is a question with many different answers,it is really depend on the judgement of yourself, provide a great resource here for reference though.http://car-insurance.easyideas4u.info/ca...

  2. Check your insurance out - the amount of time you are allowed to spend out of the country will vary from one company to another - its unlikely that you will get cover for a full 12 months use abroad - most companies limit this to 90 days.

In addition to the triangle there are other requirements for spain - including the requirement to carry a full set of replacement bulbs for your vehicle. If you wear glasses you are required by law to have a spare pair in the car as well.

Also please note that although it is not mandatory to carry a hi visibility jacket in your car  in Spain - it is in France (as of 1st July 2008) so you would be advised to do that.

There is also a 'good samaritan' law in Spain that requires you to stop and offer assistance if you come across an accident.

Beware of speeding on your drive through France - the French police target foreign plate cars - be prepared for an on the spot fine if caught (and they will escort you to a cashpoint if needed) or having your car impounded. The british authorities cooperate fully with the french so any speed cameras that you go through will result in a fine - the british will forward your details on request.

    Hope this helps.

  3. You have to have one of those reflective triangles in case of a break down, and you have to have what is known as Headlight diverters, What these do is divert the beam to the right because you are travelling on the right. In the UK because we drive on the left if you observe your beam as you dip you will see it diverts to the curb on the left, the opposite has to happen in Spain. You also need to contact your insurance broker who will get you what is known as a GREEN CARD  to cover you while abroad.

  4. The answer may vary by person. It would be a good idea to hear some of them and try to choose the best one. Here is a good one.http://car-insurance.bestips.info/car-in...
