What do I need to do to become a detective in Virginia?

I live in VA and am 28. I have no experience w/this. I am a computer technician but interested in being a detective. What do I need to do? What is required?

Local police detective, federal detective, private detective???

Get hired by a pd....go to the academy....work on the street for a few years......apply to be a detective...then you have to be selected over the other dozens or hundreds who want to be a detective who've done the same thing you've done.  GOOD LUCK!
