My dad kneeboards, he taught me 6 years ago on that i wasnt very tall, and his baord being wide made it easy to ride.... just takes time, it also depends on the age. u need to elaberate on your question.

Its just like anything else, practice.

get him a soft top or foam board, or NSP, get in da water and push him in waves till your kid stands kids learn so quick and kids are nicer than adults (to each other)

I'm a professional intructor for Ron Jon Surf School. Surfing since 1977. I would recommend pro lessons for at least 1 or 2 hours. It will save alot of time and will become more fun quicker. first you must be sure your kid is willing to surf. no sense trying to teach when they are not willing to learn. boogie boards with the use of fins are a great start.

i tell ya what my mum got me a wetsuit a roxy syncro tech $159 and a new softlite 5'8 surfboard $300 and i was set but she is a surfer

First you will need to get them to get lessons and they normally have rash gaurds and boards there. But as he/she gets more into surfing then you can get them there own rash gaurd and board.

depends on the age. If they are really little say between 5 and 10, get them a light foam surfboard they can mess around with in the shorebreak and have fun, find their balance and coordination etc. That is a cheap way of doing it, maybe a wetsuit for them if its cold water, and them let them progress up to a fibregalss board a while later. Make sure they are confident swimmers of course and can navigate the waves and currents first.
