Question:

What do I need to do to move closer to my disabled mum who needs me to care for her?

I live in a council flat in London (UK) and would like to live closer to my mother (50 miles away in Essex). She is disabled and needs care which I would like to provide if I lived nearer. I am a lone parent with 3 young children. How do I go about getting a flat nearer her? Is there a long waiting list for people in my situation? Do I go to my council, her council, disability? Any help would be appriiated, thankyou kind people.

Ps, I don't think a mutual swap is possible or likely as I don't live in a great area. It's pretty run down.

  1. I work as a carer (paid) and I honestly don't see how you can look after your mum, given your circumstances.  You need to get in touch with your mum's nearest Social Services and arrange for a carer to visit her, and also to sort out how much funding your mum can get.  Somebody will need to assess her first of all, and it will go from there.  I know you want to do it yourself (I looked after my own mum for nearly 5 years until she died of cancer) but you will have to accept other help.

PS: If I lived in Essex I would look after your mum, because mums are precious.  But do all you can to make sure your mum gets the best care possible.
