Im 5'10" 330 lbs, run a 5 flat, max leg press about 1000 lbs, max bench 270. Im always told im fast for my size and considering how quick my max bench improved( from 195 to 270. 2 times a week for about 6 weeks) i think i might be able to meet any requirement as far as strength goes. My question is how fast do you think i need to get to play fullback? When i was in highschool i was always the guy to give the ball in little pick up games. It just so happened that our pick up games would involve all the starters of the varsity defensive staff and i would still do good. I have a good feeling i could lose weight, work out and get to a 4.8-4.9 by the end of this year and i will be going to the university of akron so i have a prime environment for strength training. How do i get started?

  1. Only 1 in 100 HS seniors who play football ever make a college team.  Your odds are slimmer. Not trying to dissuade you, just keeping it real.

If I were you, I'd start with a junior college or D2/D3 school, talk to one of the coaches there about walking on and what it would take.  Since they don't have big recruiting budgets and lots of scholarships then they are more likely to be receptive to someone in your position.

Then work your rear end off.  Train with some of your friends who are going to play college football.  Without that "football knowledge" that others have you will be behind the curve so you'll need to work harder to prove more.

  2. sounds like you should try out for punter.

  3. If you did not play competitive football in high school, it is very highly unlikely that no one knows of you.  Therefore, you will have to be a walk on.  What this requires is visiting a number of schools and meeting with the head football coach.  It isn't easy getting to meet a high profile coach so you will have to use some ingenuity.  First, create a resume with your height, weight, workout regimite, etc and what you could bring to the team.  Send it to as many head coaches as you can find addresses.  Email also.  Do this with 1AA and AAA teams was well.  You might can get addresses off their web sites.  Send to the athletic department in care of head coach's name.  You never know.  Don't limit yourself to any one school.  There is better success in numbers.  I would think a fullback that large would be of use.  You may have to enroll in a college and then get a walk on invitation.  It will not be easy, but if you don't try it surely will not happen.

    Good luck.
