What do I need to do to whinterize a mercury outboard boatmotor?

I have a 225 Mercury outboard boatmotor. The boat is on a trailor and exposed to the cold. I am looking for info on winterizing this motor. Do I need to Drain anything?

  1. well...you can go buy a manual for $40 and avoid thousands in repairs. You should def. drain the lower unit. Run out any fuel, etc. One quick and easy way to winterise is to start it with the lower unit in a bucket of antifreeze...done...tie a rope to the bucket to hold it up...so the antifreeze wont drain...and throw a small 6X8 tarp over the motor and bucket.

    Just remember...being cheap can be expensive!!!!!!

Not sure on everything but its a good idea to run all off the gas out of the motor by disconnecting the fuel line and letting it run until it dies this prevents the carb from gumming also cover the boat well and add some fuel stabalizer to any gas left in the tank it can also help to bring your batteries inside as the cold weather is hard on them im not sure this is everything but this is all that i have done to my boats in the past and they have been just fine.
