Question:

What do I need to go fishing for Brook Trout?

I am going to Russel Pond in NH, it's a 4o acre lake hidden in the mountains. The Fish and game website states that the only fish that are in there are Brook Trout. Last time I went I didn't have much success.

I am not a flyfishing fan or anything, I prefer having a bobby and throwing it in. I can also do angling.

What do I need? That size of hook? Will trout worms work good?

  1. i have to agree with FishStee, i use panther martins and they work great . yellow body with black dots.

  2. Other alternatives to bait are in-line spinners. Have done well on Brookies with a personal preference of mine and that be Panther Martin. Another spinner that has been a producer is the Blue Fox. Might just want ta' pick some up and givin' a shot ;)...

Panther Martin (two colors that I lean towards are the 002 and 092).

Blue Fox (colors ~ again my preferences 014/Blue, 002/Gold and the 513/Hot Pepper):

  3. Pole, Bubble, Nightcrawlers, powerbait, and a number 6 or 8 hook

    Good Luck & Good Fishing

  4. I've done well with night crawlers (med size not the big ones) with a size 6 hook and an egg sinker and a small splitshot sinker bb or b to stop the egg sinker from flying around.

Or I use a dressed Mepps Black Fury with yellow dots and orange dots (2 diff spinners) one usually gets them about 1/6oz.  or maybe a Kastmaster gold or silver 1/12 oz or 1/8 oz

Yellow powerbait or chartruse maybe orange (colors could be diff from day to day) same setup...

size 14 or 16 treble hook  a 12 -18 inch 2lb leader next is a size 14 black brass barrel swivel and a 1/8 oz egg sinker....

if you can use 2 poles I'd cast one out with bait and use the lures with the other... also you could look for crayfish and use them for bait best ones are 2 - 2.5 inches size 10 hook and no sinker let it float down and walk around...cast gently so you don't kill it (let the brookies do it !!)

I've slain many nice trout with a crayfish...also try going to where any streams dump into the lake - the water could be cooler and provide a food source for the fish - hence a staging area for hungry fish...

Remember a bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work....

  5. Im not sure about trout worms but I prefer salmon eggs I once caught over 30 brook trout with them. You can get them at a bait shop near thee lake. Also corn and power bait work very well. As for hook size a 6 works well. Hope I helped!!
